Many schools, particularly those in a challenging urban context, find themselves lacking leadership and management capacity. They may need short term support to address a particular issue or longer term intervention to tackle a deep-rooted and complex set of circumstances.

The most common solution is either to draft in various specialist consultants, each with a specific remit, or to employ interim senior managers to cover existing vacancies and deliver a largely operational role.

In both cases the outcomes can be limited. Individual consultants and advisers may never become more than the sum of their parts and their impact is hard to sustain. Interim Managers provide a solution in a crisis but rarely impact upon the longer term strategic direction and development of the school.
